Survivors Of Sexual Violence in Kenya Network Mentorship

Information and knowledge shared has more impact if well utilized. Members of the Survivors of Sexual Violence in Kenya (SSVKenya) will be undergoing a 8 weeks mentorship training which will advance what they do in their respective communities. As an organization, we believe in creating opportunities for survivors to be able to have a better version of them. Effective listening is very key when responding to any query, case or giving feedback.

On 20th June 2023, we received a courtesy visit from Olga Tapiola, Spouse to the Finnish Ambassador in exploring areas of mutual interest and opportunities. She got to understand what we do as an organization, how the Survivors of Sexual Violence in Kenya Network works and how we engage with survivors.

On 6th June 2023, we officially launched Voicing Our Plight: Using Photovoice to Assess Perceptions of Mental Health Services for Survivors of Sexual Violence in Kenya report highlighting gaps, challenges and recommendations to different duty bearers and stakeholders.

World Press Freedom Day

On 2nd May 2023, we joined a roundtable discussion bringing together journalists, human rights defenders, academia, civil society organizations, development partners and different associations discussing new threats to freedom of expression and brainstorm solutions on how to strengthen press freedom in the region hosted by Aga Khan University

We paid Hon. Veronica Nduva - Principal Secretary, State Department for Gender and Affirmative Action a courtesy visit in discussing different ways in which sexual violence should be addressed and presented Wangu Kanja Foundation Strategic Plan 2023-2028.

National Gender and Equality Commission - Kenya And Stakeholders On Guiding Principles Of Survivor Care

In partnership with The National Gender and Equality Commission-Kenya we convened a meeting bringing together different stakeholders, duty bearers and survivors of sexual violence with representatives from National Police Service, Kenya Judiciary, State Department for Gender, Government Chemist Department, Ministry Of Education and Survivors of Sexual Violence in Kenya Network members among others. The aim of the meeting being sensitizing duty bearers and stakeholders on the guiding principles of Survivor Care in the promotion of ‘Do No Harm and to demystify the role of duty bearers in response to sexual violence.

The Kenya Women And Children's Wellness Centre

On 15th March 2023, our team was hosted by Mrs. Deloris Jordan of James R. Jordan Foundation and the founder of Kenya Women and children Wellness Centre on a roundtable discussion to share ideas, develop common strategies, map future partnerships and efforts to address sexual and gender-based violence and improve survivor support. The KWCWC is one stop centre for all survivors’ services. The centre hosts a Gender Violence Recovery Centre (GVRC), Family village (hostel), Research and Training Centre, Paediatric Care, HIV/ AIDS Out-Patient Clinic, Burns Unit and other facilities which are still under construction.

International Day of Women Judges Commemoration

On 10th March 2023, we joined International Association of Women Judges (IAWJ) - Kenya Chapter in commemorating the International Day Of Women Judges at the Makadara Law Courts graced by Lady Justice Hon. Agnes Murgor - Judge of Appeal and President of IAWJ Kenya Chapter.

Strategic Plan Launch

On 1st March 2023, Wangu Kanja Foundation launched a Strategic Plan 2023-2027 that focuses more on empowering survivors of sexual violence, building resilience of survivors, acknowledging inter-sectionality, diversity and inclusivity and strengthening WKF to undertake its mandate.

Presenting A Memorandum to the Police and Prison Reforms Taskforce Kenya

On behalf of the Coalition of Organisations Working to End Sexual Violence in Kenya, our Executive Director presented a memorandum to the Police and Prison Reforms Taskforce Kenya led by the former Chief Justice CJ DAVID Maraga in a public participation held at the Jericho Social Hall. In our memorandum, we called for the establishment of a sex crimes unit whose focus shall be the management and response to cases of sexual violence. This would ensure that they are expeditiously and diligently dealt with.

The Wangu Kanja Foundation Board Members, Staff and volunteers held a fruitful meeting chaired by Ms Rachel Muthoga. The deliberations centred on aligning our programs with the strategic plan and how our synergies should contribute in the realization of the organization's goals and vision.

Minimum Sentencing Procession

On this day, we successfully delivered our petition to the Supreme Court received by Chief Registrar of Judiciary Anne Amadi on behalf of the Chief Justice Martha K. Koome. Our message of the day being survivors should be protected and treated with respect and dignity.

Walking with Survivors

As Wangu Kanja Foundation we walk with survivors in making sure they receive all the necessary services and also work with duty bearers in making sure that the perpetrator is arrested and arraigned in court. Courtesy Visit to Internal Affairs Unit (IAU)

On 23rd November 2023, Wangu Kanja Foundation organised a meeting where survivors of sexual violence consulted with Internal Affairs Unit-Kenya . It would have not happened because of the relationship WKF has with various duty bears, civil society organizations and other duty bearers. It's through these engagements that duty bearers are able to understand what happens at the ground.

Court Users Committee (CUC) Briefing on Children Act 2022

In partnership with Centre for Rights Education and Awareness (CREAW) we supported a court users committee (CUC) meeting convened by Makadara Law Courts. The meeting brought all persons and institutions that interact with the court from both state and non-state actors in getting to understand the enacted Children Act 2022. The CUC focused on reports from departmental reports, highlights on the new Children Act 2022, status of the CPU's at the police and social report inquiry.

Awareness Creation On Sexual Violence Through Football Tournament

With the rise of sexual violence cases in schools, in partnership with schools, we launched a school football tournament within Mukuru settlement that brought together 16 schools and clubs. The main objective of the tournament is to create awareness on sexual violence within schools and give referral pathways and advocate for schools to be safe places.

National Gender and Equality Commission- Kenya Reflection Workshop

In partnership with UN Women Kenya and The National Gender and Equality Commission-Kenya, we conveneed a 2-day reflection workshop on ending all forms of sexual and gender-based violence with focus on 2022 general elections.
The objectives of the workshop are to review the commission's experiences in documenting and reporting cases of sexual and gender-based violence during elections and propose a robust mechanism and strategies for documenting and reporting all forms of sexual and gender-based violence among all special groups.

Peanut Butter As An Economic Empowerment Initiative

Queenz Pure And Natural Peanut Butter is an initiative by Wangu Kanja Foundation that seeks to restore dignity to survivors of sexual violence through economic empowerment. The peanut butter is natural and is also suitable for vegetarians. Economic/financial insecurity is one of the key reasons why women remain in a situation of violence. Economic empowerment has a positive impact on survivors and it has the potential to decrease the risk for further abuse.

Courtesy Visit From Auditor General Office

On 6th September 2022, we hosted officers from the Office of the Auditor-General Kenya who are carrying out a pre-study for performance audit on coordination of activities in elimination of SGBV in the State Department for Gender. The officers involved in the exercise had a one-on-one discussion with our Executive Director in understanding the documentation of sexual and gender-based violence and its challenges.

Social Media Influencers Training

On 31st August 2022, we held a social media training on creatives and social media activists in amplifying messages of sexual violence on prevention, protection, response and documentation. The session focused on forms of sexual violence, laws and policies, by stander intervention, survivor-centered approach among other topics on sexual violence.
Social media is known to be a contributor of sexual violence. However, it can also a play a huge role in shaping and growing conversations around sexual violence. Tackling sexual violence needs a multi-sectoral approach from all angles. We continue to work in having a society that is safe and free from all forms of sexual violence.

Survivors Of Sexual Violence Review Meeting On Monitoring And Documenting Cases Of Electoral Related Sexual Violence

In partnership with Physicians for Human Rights we convened a review meeting on monitoring and documenting cases of electoral related sexual violence. The review meeting focused on feedback on challenges, opportunities and good practices in the recently concluded August 2022 elections.

SGBV Report Meeting From Different Hospitals

A contingency plan for both pre and post-election was developed in June by different key partners. The review meeting convened by Wangu Kanja Foundation and Nairobi Metropolitan Services focused on what worked well, what didn't, challenges and gaps from the contingency plan.
Sub-Counties Ministry of Health, hospitals, program managers and partners shared their reports on preparedness, challenges, continuity of services, incidences and areas of improvement on provision of health services.

Order Of The Star

On 18th March 2022, our Founder and Executive Director was awarded the Honour in the Rank of Knight Of The Order Of The Star of Italy by the Ambassador of Italy, Alberto Pieri on behalf of the president of the Republic of Italy.

Human Rights Defenders (HRDs) Training

For 2 months (May and June) we conducted capacity building training to human rights defenders within Nairobi County informal settlements - Kibera, Mukuru, Kayole, Mathare, Korogocho and Dandora. HRDs are Now able to amplify the voices of survivors and tackle social norms, attitudes and values that normalize and justify the perpetuation of sexual violence. Through the trainings, 150+ HRDs are now on alert in the prevention, response and documentation of sexual violence cases.

Community Health Promoters or previously known as Community Health Volunteers (CHV) are very key people in our society. The community health team got to watch the Unbroken Voices documentary with many suggesting there's a need to have more of these stories.
