Survivors of sexual violence want peace and justice to reign in Kenya
Failure by the government to act on recommendations of the documented horrors in the 2007/8 Post Election Violence (PEV) report compiled by the Justice Philip Waki-led Commission on Inquiry into the Post-Election Violence (CIPEV) continues to be a source of concern which only compounds the fears of Kenyans. Almost ten years on from Kenya’s brush with all-out civil war, the Waki Commission findings together with the Truth, Justice and Reconciliation Commission (TJRC) report remain dusty reference materials on government shelves.

Hi, My name is Katie Calavan and I am an MSW. I am volunteering at First Love Kenya Children’s Home. This past October, I created a therapy room, “the Amani Room” for the 120 children living there. The organization is only 13 years old and the children have not had any therapy or addressed their trauma. I am a former dancer as well and used music and movement along with yoga and progressive relaxation techniques. I trained their 2 social workers on sand tray therapy, narrative therapy, and play therapy which continues today. The children responded so well to the movement and dance! I would love to learn more and train with a dance therapist. I am planning on coming next February and would love connect and see if there is a program for our children. Most are sexual abuse survivors and all have had significant trauma. Many thanks for the work that you do.
