Assessment of the Prevalence of Gender-based Violence in Higher Education Institutions in Kenya – Study Report 2024

This study constitutes a formative descriptive assessment informing GBV prevention and response mechanisms in higher education institutions (HEI).

The overall goal of this study was to understand the burden of GBV, its root causes, forms, prevention, and response mechanisms, and its impacts on institutions of higher learning. Specifically, the study aimed to:

  • i. Assess the prevalence of gender-based violence (GBV) in higher education institutions.
  • ii. Investigate the root causes and manifestations of GBV experienced within higher education institutions.
  • iii. Undertake an in-depth analysis of the impact of GBV on higher education institutions
  • iv. Examine the existing strategies and mechanisms for GBV prevention and response within higher education institutions.

The Wangu Kanja Foundation (WKF) through Oxfam In Kenya Support implemented this study within six institutions of higher learning in Kenya. This study constitutes a formative descriptive assessment informing GBV prevention and response mechanisms in higher education institutions (HEI).
